Charlotte HEALTH&FITNESS magazine, Aug 2006
It's summertime again…time to enjoy the great outdoors with family and friends. It's also time to prepare and protect against the sun's harmful rays that inevitably will strike and turn us red and tan. Hopefully, we will all remember to use our sunscreen because, most assuredly, the sun can cause skin cancer through insidious processes that take 10-20 years to develop from time of exposure. However, did you also know that the sun breaks down collagen and causes premature aging of the skin in a much more rapid fashion? Read on to learn about so called “photoaging” and how we can reverse these effects with the wonders of cutting edge medical technology.

What You Can Do To Reduce Your Risk of Skin Cancer
By Dr. J. Blake Goslen, III
More than one third of all cancers originate in the skin. The total number of skin cancers diagnosed in the United States annually has grown from 300,000 in 1977 to an estimated one million today. During our lifetimes, skin cancer will develop in one in five of us. Scary, isn't it? Not as scary, however, as the fact the melanoma - the deadliest form of skin cancer - has increased 15 fold in the last 60 years. A child born in the year 2000 is estimated to have a lifetime risk of developing melanoma of about one in seventy five!
Sobering, isn't it? And yet, few of us take the steps necessary to lower our risk. We continue to ignore advice about suncreeens, we shudder at the thought of being "pasty white." In short, we stick our heads in the sand.
But the battle against skin cancer does not have to be insurmountable. You need master only a few basic points.

The Latest Varicose
Vein Treatments
By Gilly S. Munavalli, MD, MHS
More than half of the adult population ultimately develops a weakness
in the circulatory system, which leads to varicose and spider veins.
So... next question – what to do about it?
No one knows the exact reason why
the valves that push the blood
through the veins break down, but
genetics plays the strongest role.
Hormones also are thought to be
involved. Varicosity often appears
during pregnancy and menopause, and women
taking birth control pills or hormone replacement
therapy are more prone to it. Varicosity
develops in twice as many women as men.
In addition to being unsightly, varicose veins
can cause leg fatigue, swelling, aching and
sometimes throbbing. People should consult
with a physician if they experience discomfort.
Lack of treatment can result in constantly
swollen legs, an itchy rash and, because circulation
becomes compromised, ulcers on the inner
side of the ankle, especially in older adults.

Thinking About Liposuction? Part II
By Gilly S. Munavalli, MD, MHS
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery, Surgical
cosmetic procedures increased 4 percent, with more than 1.8 million
procedures performed in 2005. The top five surgical procedures were
liposuction (324,000), nose reshaping (298,000); breast augmentation
(291,000), eyelid surgery (231,000), and tummy tuck (135,000). In
part one of this series on Liposuction, I discussed the history of
liposuction and how it works. I wasn’t trying to be Dr. Cliff
Clavin of Cheers fame, but it is really helpful to understand how
the technique was developed. I also wanted to explain the advances
over the past 15 years with this wonderful technique, which make it
so popular, safe, and effective. In this article, we will discuss
we will discuss patient evaluation, expectations, and what questions
to ask when consulting with physicians for liposuction.
